California roof panel paint blister

Post by AndrewDunc » Fri Aug 07, 2015 12:53 pm

My 1 year old California developed these roof blisters overnight on the panel immediately above the windscreen. Dealer and warranty department refuse to fix. They say it was " probably caused by a stone or gravel impact that hasn't been promptly repaired". That's not fair. I check my car almost daily. The blister is perfectly round and came up overnight. To me, it looks like the paint was not properly bonded to the metal. Not getting anywhere with VW Customer Service, just got in touch with VW finance and trading standards, to see if that helps. Really worried as may deteriorate more, if not dealt with quickly. Not sure what to do next. Any help please!

Welcome Andrew.

It would look to me from your pictures that there has been a problem with the adhesion of the paint applied at the factory. Yes of course a stone chip could cause damage but I wouldn't expect it to manifest in the way yours has. What makes me more suspicious is the well known and documented issues with the paint on these roof's.

Have you tried another dealer? How about an independent Bodyshop report?

I assume you know that part of the roof is made of aluminum and o requires specialist painting.

This is a known problem and one which the paint warranty was extended to six years for the pop up roof and front faring. There is a different repair procedure to normal paint warranty claims and four body shops in the country that are carrying out the repair.

Your dealer is talking absolute rubbish. Find another one and ask them to submit a claim for you. They would also have to prove it was a stone chip that was left unattended but when I was with VW I would get very claim authorised without issue.

Cheers and good luck!

They're still refusing it as a warranty issue. They are wrong and I'm in touch with training standards. Customer Service response has been poor. My car was in immaculate condition and I'm sure the blister came up within a day. There was no previous damage.

Have you had it assessed at another local bodyshop? preferably one whom is specialist at Aluminium painting?

How about a trip to one of the northern specialist repairers for the roof issue??

Thanks for that. I'm taking it for a report and estimate. Trading Standards said they would proceed but that I should give Manchester VW Van Centre another opportunity to make repairs. Still waiting.

Still no success with VW. This is a nightmare. It is so obviously a paintwork fault. There was no "impact" that caused this. It came up in the sunlight, like a tennis ball. Believe or not, I had even paid extra to have paintwork protected with GuardX too, on VW recommendation. Thought my motor insurance company might help. No chance. They say it's a warranty issue. I'm stuck with no solution and un- protected metalwork - that might deteriorate. VW trying to close the issue.

Have you tried another VW dealer?

Otherwise I would consider an independent view of someone like the AA or RAC.
